Naturopathic physicians

Naturopathic physicians combine the wisdom of nature with the rigors of modern science. Steeped in traditional healing methods, principles and practices, naturopathic medicine focuses on holistic, proactive prevention and comprehensive diagnosis and treatment. By using protocols that minimize the risk of harm, naturopathic physicians help facilitate the body’s inherent ability to restore and maintain optimal health. It is the naturopathic physician’s role to identify and remove barriers to good health by helping to create a healing internal and external environment.

There are two areas of focus in naturopathy: one is supporting the body's own healing abilities, and the other is empowering people to make lifestyle changes necessary for the best possible health. While naturopathic doctors treat both short bouts of illness and chronic conditions, their emphasis is on preventing disease and educating patients.

The particular modalities used by an individual naturopath varies with training and scope of practice. These include: acupuncture, applied kinesiology, botanical medicine,  color therapy, homeopathy, live blood analysis, nature cures, nutrition (examples include vegetarian and wholefood diet, fasting), ozone therapy, physical medicine and hydrotherapy, Psychological counseling (e.g., meditation and relaxation), public health measures and hygiene, reflexology, Massage Therapy and traditional Chinese medicine.

A Naturopath is a health practitioner who applies natural therapies. Her/his spectrum comprises far more than fasting, nutrition, water, and exercise; it includes approved natural healing practices such as Homeopathy, Acupuncture, and Herbal Medicine, as well as the use of modern methods like Bio-Resonance, Ozone-Therapy, and Colon Hydrotherapy.

Naturopathic doctors treat the whole person, which means they consider a variety of factors before they diagnose an illness. An N.D. might look at your mental, emotional, and spiritual state; your diet; your family history; your environment; and your lifestyle before making a diagnosis.

NDs treat all medical conditions and can provide both individual and family health care. Among the most common ailments they treat are allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome.

Naturopathic medicine is for people of all ages and health histories who want to take their health into their own hands. NDs are primary health providers and are qualified to see and treat everyone, though some NDs specialize in specific areas, such as pediatrics, geriatrics, cancer care, sports medicine, digestive health, pain management, etc.
